NAKHON PHANOM, THAILAND – Thai border police intercepted a transporter carrying 480 kilograms of crystal meth in what authorities described as a major blow to an international drug syndicate.
High-speed chase ends in residential dead end
After weeks of surveillance, officers moved in during the night of 13 January, suspecting that a syndicate was again attempting to move tons of drugs across the Mekong from Laos. Police units positioned themselves along the river when a suspicious vehicle drew their attention near a shrine in Ban Cha-ngom, triggering a pursuit. The vehicle eventually turned into a housing estate in Ban Nong Chan, where it was cornered and the occupants had no way to escape.
480 kilograms of “Ice” hidden in ten sacks
When officers searched the transporter, they found not furniture or goods but ten tightly packed sacks. Inside were 480 kilograms of the highly dangerous party drug crystal meth, also known as “Ice,” with an estimated street value of many millions of euros in Europe. Police also seized a homemade firearm with ammunition, two cars and a motorcycle, and arrested four suspects at the scene.
Link to Mekong-based international syndicate
Authorities said the operation was the result of months of meticulous work, following an earlier seizure of 490 kilograms of crystal meth in the same area on 3 November the previous year. Ongoing investigations led officers to an international network said to operate from the Mekong village of Kut Khao Pun, according to border police commander Lieutenant General Rungrroj Thakoonpunyasiri.
“It is a transnational smuggling syndicate that threatens national security.”
said a police spokesman. The drugs were intended for resale both domestically and abroad.
Severe charges and ongoing investigation
The four detainees faced severe penalties after being charged with possession of a Category-1 drug for sale. The alleged offences were classified as commercial and as impairing national security, an especially serious criminal category, alongside accusations of illegal weapons possession. The suspects were taken to Border Police Company 236 in Nakhon Phanom for further questioning as investigators worked to uncover more of the network.
Nearly a tonne seized in a few months
With almost one tonne of crystal meth seized within a few months on this route, Thai police said they had inflicted a heavy blow on traffickers along the Mekong corridor. Officials argued the confiscations prevented countless ruined lives and millions in criminal profits, and demonstrated determined cooperation among Thai agencies. They stressed that the struggle along one of Southeast Asia’s key smuggling routes would continue, but described the latest operation as an important victory for security in the region.
