BANGKOK, THAILAND – A seemingly harmless New Year’s selfie with a former actress sent Thai social media into a frenzy and prompted Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to publicly play down the incident.
The New Year selfie that went viral
During a New Year’s Eve fireworks show, former actress Pinsuda “Balloon” Tanphairoh took a selfie that also showed Prime Minister Anutin and his son Pek Saranee. She posted the image with the caption:
“Happy New Year 2026. P.S. What a lovable family.”
said Pinsuda, former actress. The apparent closeness in the photo immediately fueled speculation online about whether the moment was more than a chance encounter.
Prime minister’s confused but relaxed response
On Monday, 5 January, Anutin felt compelled to address the issue.
“I am still a bit confused about how this could even have come out,”
said Anutin Charnvirakul, prime minister. After reporters explained that Pinsuda herself had uploaded the images, he laughed off the rumors and offered a blunt dismissal. His core message was:
“Oh, there is nothing to it. Nothing with the father and nothing with the son.”
