BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s most decorated Olympic boxer Manus Boonjumnong was arrested and sentenced to nearly three years in prison over a lottery fraud case.
From Olympic ring to Bangkok prison
Former national hero Manus Boonjumnong, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and silver in Beijing in 2008, was detained on 19 December 2025 by the Anti-Fraud Division. Officers acted on two arrest warrants issued by the Don Mueang Court. He had failed to appear for the pronouncement of his own verdict and was transferred directly to Bangkok Special Prison after his arrest.
The 2021 lottery investment scheme
The case centered on a 2021 fraud in which a victim handed the boxing star two million baht (about 50,000 euros) to finance a lottery wholesale business. Manus claimed the share came from a well-connected senior contact, but the promised lottery tickets never arrived. When the investor asked follow-up questions, the athlete avoided clear answers.
Bitter joke during arrest
During his removal by officers, Manus made a darkly humorous remark about what he was missing.
“Today is the Southeast Asian Games championship in 12 weight classes. I did not think I would be arrested today. I will miss cheering at the boxing,”
said Manus Boonjumnong, former Olympic boxing champion.
Harsh sentence for a fallen idol
The court did not grant a lenient outcome. For the first fraud count, Manus received one year and six months in prison, and for the second he was given one year and three months. In total, the sentence amounted to two years and nine months behind bars, underscoring that even a sporting idol enjoyed no protection before the law.
A stellar career cut short by crime
Manus had been regarded as a living legend and the only Thai boxer with two Olympic medals. His record also included gold at the Asian Games and two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games. The plunge from the highest sporting honors into criminal conviction shocked the nation, leaving many fans struggling to understand the downfall of their idol.
Struggles after the final bell
Experts suspected that the difficult transition from celebrated star to ordinary civilian life played a role in his trajectory. Many athletes failed to gain financial stability once their careers ended. Pressure to maintain a certain standard of living and a lack of guidance could push some into illegality, making Manus’s case a stark warning for the wider sports system.
A painful loss for Thai sport
With Manus’s incarceration, Thailand lost more than a prominent athlete; it lost part of its sporting identity and a figure who had inspired an entire generation. His legacy in the ring remained untouched, but his name was now permanently linked with fraud and prison, marking a deeply tragic final chapter.
