Citizenship Scandal Rocks Thai Immigration
A storm is brewing in Thailand. Serious bribery allegations hit the country’s immigration offices. A government committee is now probing claims of officials demanding cash from migrants for citizenship. At least five cases look suspicious.
A local panel led by Korrawee Prissananantakul, 38, a politician, leads the charge. In one shocking incident, a government worker allegedly asked an applicant for 30,000 Baht. The money was to be split—10,000 Baht up front, the rest later.
‘These payments are not isolated,’ Korrawee told senior interior ministry staff this week. ‘We’re seeing at least four or five similar complaints already. The full truth is yet to emerge.’
Senior Officials Under Pressure
The heat is on. At a crucial meeting, Nirat Phongsitthithawon, 55, ministry secretary, joined top figures. Also present—the director of the country’s provincial office and governors from two northern provinces.
The Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA) has sent investigators out. Village heads and district staff are under suspicion. But it doesn’t stop there. ‘Even higher officials could be involved,’ warns Korrawee.
This is now a national issue. The probe shines a harsh spotlight on Thailand’s government.
Citizenship Pathway Overwhelmed
Timing couldn’t be worse. Since October 2024, a mass naturalisation scheme lets nearly 500,000 eligible migrants apply for passports. The initiative, set to run until mid-2026, aims to give long-term residents new hope.
But processing delays are widespread. So far, 8,200 have secured citizenship, with 23,000 more stuck in limbo. Understaffed offices and small spaces are slowing everything down.
Hopes are dashed for many. ‘We just want a fair chance,’ says one applicant.
Fallout: Key Resignation As Inquiry Deepens
Consequences are hitting home. In one case, Nopparut Suphakitgosol, 46, a local chief, confirmed a village head near Chiang Rai resigned. The man allegedly asked each applicant for 4,000 Baht.
Authorities have rushed in help. Extra staff and equipment are now in place. The goal? Clear 100 applications daily. But, warns Korrawee, corruption claims threaten the entire programme.
Nobody knows yet how many more officials could be implicated.
