BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thai Airways rerouted its Europe flights to avoid airspace over Pakistan and Afghanistan due to rising regional tensions, extending flight times by about 20 minutes.
Safety moves to avoid conflict airspace
Thai Airways chief executive Chai Eamsiri raised the alarm over the situation in the Middle East and South Asia.
“The situation is tense. We have to act,”
said Chai, CEO of Thai Airways, in comments to the business newspaper Krungthep Turakij. He cited escalating conflicts between Pakistan and Afghanistan as the reason for the new safety measures.
The airline decided to route its jets on significant detours. Aircraft now avoided the contested airspace over Pakistan and Afghanistan entirely.
Longer Europe flights, limited extra costs
The new flight paths had clear operational consequences. Services to Europe now needed around 20 minutes more flying time, and fuel consumption rose slightly. However, the airline viewed the financial impact as manageable.
“The additional costs remain limited,”
said the chief executive, seeking to reassure passengers. For the company, the crucial factor was that travellers remained safe, with no risks and no compromises.
Israel and Iran tensions cause fewer changes
Tensions between Israel and Iran were described as even more dangerous, with both countries partly closing their airspace. For Thai Airways, though, this development did not require route changes.
“We do not fly through the airspace of these countries anyway,”
explained Chai Eamsiri with relief. That removed a major concern for the Thai carrier, while some other airlines had to carry out extensive replanning. Thai Airways was able to maintain its existing routings in that region.
What passengers needed to know
Travellers heading to Europe with Thai Airways were advised to plan a little more time for their journeys. The extra 20 minutes in the air were noticeable but still considered manageable.
The diversions mainly affected flights that normally crossed Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially routes to northern and western Europe. The airline said it would inform all passengers in good time about any potential delays.
Security remained the top priority
The Thai carrier underlined that, in times of crisis, the safety of everyone on board was the only priority. While some airlines were still weighing their options, Thai Airways had already implemented its route changes.
“We are monitoring the situation around the clock,”
promised the CEO. If conditions were to deteriorate further, the airline would immediately adjust its operations again.
