NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, THAILAND – A mother, father and their two-year-old child were shot and injured after allegedly being attacked by a teen gang in apparent revenge for a roadside warning.
Family ambushed after running out of fuel
On the evening of 2 January 2026, Wisuwat, 37, was travelling by motorcycle with his wife Narumon, 32, and their two‑year‑old son in the Thung Song district when their vehicle ran out of fuel. As they pushed the motorcycle along a rural road, two motorcycles carrying five teenagers reportedly appeared.
The youths had allegedly been involved in a fight moments earlier, and Wisuwat had called out to them to stop. That brief admonition almost proved fatal for the family.
Shotgun fired at parents and toddler
According to police, one of the teenagers, 17‑year‑old Chakrit, was carrying a short‑barrelled shotgun and opened fire on the family. All three were injured and required medical treatment, but were later reported to be in stable condition in hospital.
“It was revenge for the verbal admonition. The perpetrators acted out of anger and impulsiveness.”
said a police spokesperson.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Rapid arrests after CCTV review
Using CCTV footage and witness testimony, officers from Thung Song police identified the alleged assailants. In a coordinated operation, all five suspects, aged between 15 and 18, were arrested, including the suspected shooter Chakrit and the motorcycle driver Natthapol.
Police seized a shotgun and ammunition as part of the investigation. The case prompted the local community to follow developments closely.
Serious charges and juvenile court proceedings
Police Colonel Somporn Nitiphak, head of Thung Song police, announced that the suspects would face legal consequences. They were accused of attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public place.
Because the suspects are minors, juvenile criminal law applies and the case is to be heard before a juvenile court. Investigators continued to examine the circumstances of the earlier brawl.
Debate over illegal weapons among youth
The attack fuelled a wider debate about youth crime and access to illegal firearms in Thailand, particularly in rural regions. The central question raised was how minors obtain guns.
Experts called for stricter controls on the weapons trade and better education within families, warning that illegal gun possession among adolescents is a growing problem. Social workers stressed the need for prevention programmes to teach young people about the consequences of violence.
Community support and calls for prevention
Local communities and parents were urged to monitor young people’s behaviour more closely.
“An impulsive act in the heat of the moment can have lifelong consequences.”
said an officer.
Authorities in the area planned to expand youth work and conflict‑resolution programmes in schools, arguing that the incident highlighted the urgency of such measures.
Family recovery and ongoing investigation
For the injured family, a long physical and psychological recovery lay ahead, with a focus on counselling for the young child. Neighbours and acquaintances launched a donation campaign to help cover the medical costs, and the community expressed solidarity with the victims.
Police stressed that such acts of violence would not be tolerated and said the swift arrests were intended as a deterrent signal. Prosecutors were reviewing formal charges against all five suspects, while investigators also examined the origin of the weapon and the possible involvement of additional accomplices or facilitators.
