KO PHA-NGAN, THAILAND – A Finnish tourist who tracked her stolen earbuds with a phone app inadvertently led police to a suspected drug distribution hub on the island.
Tourist tracks stolen AirPods to Ban Tai house
The 29-year-old Matilda Daka from Finland discovered on Thursday morning that her white Apple AirPods had been stolen from her accommodation in Ban Tai. She immediately informed Tourist Police Division 5 and, together with officers, activated the “Find My” service on her iPhone. The signal guided them to a house in nearby Moo 2, Ban Tai, as tension rose with every step.
Suspect flees after alarm from hidden earbuds
When the group entered the house, they encountered 55-year-old Thai national Thanin, who was in the process of packing drugs. At that moment, Daka pressed the “Play Sound” function on her iPhone, and a loud tone rang out from the hidden AirPods. The drug suspect panicked, bolting from the house and disappearing into the mountain jungle.
Police uncover substantial drug stash
Officers found what they described as a sizeable haul left behind. Police seized 523 grams of crystal meth, five methamphetamine tablets (Yaba) and 77.7 grams of MDMA (ecstasy). They also collected packaging equipment and 19 pieces of evidence, including the AirPods and the fleeing suspect’s identity card.

Drug order call comes during house search
In the middle of the search, a phone in the house rang, and a caller ordered drugs worth 500 baht (about 12.50 euros). Police waited, and shortly afterwards 35-year-old Channarong arrived by motorcycle to pick up the goods. He was arrested on the spot.
Buyer tested positive and admitted repeat purchases
A drug test on Channarong returned positive. He confessed to having bought drugs from Thanin several times before. He now faced charges of drug consumption and driving under the influence of drugs.
Earbuds traded for drugs link theft to den
The investigation revealed that the original thief had sold the AirPods to Thanin in exchange for drugs. The thief had already been identified and was to be charged with theft. Police were seeking an arrest warrant for the fugitive Thanin, who was accused of possessing Category 1 narcotics for sale and distribution, and the search for him was ongoing.

According to officers, the accidental discovery underscored the widespread nature of the drug issue on the party island while demonstrating the determination of the tourist police to investigate.
