KRABI, THAILAND – A fully booked tourist speedboat collided with a fishing vessel off Thailand’s Andaman coast, leaving one Russian woman dead and 22 people injured.
Deadly collision on a busy tourist route
The crash occurred at about 8:55 a.m. on the route between Koh Khai and Koh Phi Phi, when a speedboat operated by the company A Timer struck the trawler “Pichaisamut 1.” The impact caused the Kornvich Marine 888 tour boat, weighing nearly 24 tonnes, to capsize. On board were three crew members, two tour guides and 50 tourists, most of them Russian nationals.
Rescue effort and triage of the injured
Two rescue boats were immediately dispatched to pull shocked and severely injured passengers from the water. In total, 22 injured people were recovered, including three Thai nationals and 19 foreigners. The casualties were classified using a colour-coded triage system: one person was listed as red (critical), two as orange, twelve as yellow and seven as green (lightly injured).
Patients transported to Phuket hospitals
All injured passengers were taken to Chalong Pier in Phuket and then transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment. A rescue helicopter was also deployed during the operation. Authorities said investigations by marine agencies and the police were under way, but the precise cause of the collision remained unclear.
Russian tourist dies from severe injuries
Despite intensive medical efforts, Russian tourist Starykh Elizaveta died in hospital from critical injuries sustained in the crash. Her death cast a harsh light on safety risks in the rapidly expanding boat tourism sector around the popular Phi Phi and Krabi islands. Relatives of the deceased and the injured tourists faced the collapse of what had been planned as a dream holiday.
Unanswered questions over cause of the crash
Key questions focused on why two vessels collided on apparently open and clear sea. The report raised the possibility that human error, excessive speed or communication failures could have played a role. The route between Phuket, the Khai Islands and Phi Phi was described as one of Thailand’s busiest tourist shipping corridors, where high-speed tour boats share narrow waters with traditional fishing vessels.
