PATTAYA, THAILAND – The upcoming Songkran festival in Pattaya was regarded as one of Thailand’s most energetic celebrations, but safety concerns and reports of unruly behavior were already prompting some visitors to hold back.
Songkran: Official holiday, extended celebration period
Although Songkran officially lasted only a few days, the festivities in Pattaya often stretched to as many as ten. Typically, the celebrations ran from about 10 to 19 April.
In the city, activities often began with informal warm-up water fights in the sois. They reached their peak in the final three days, when the largest events took place.
Major events: Beach activities and parades
Toward the end of the festival period, Pattaya staged particularly large program highlights, including activities on the beach and large-scale parades. These traditionally attracted many visitors.
For many people, the mix of parties, water fighting and major events formed the main appeal of Songkran. At the same time, the density of people on the streets and at popular hotspots rose sharply during the peak phase.
Visitor reactions: Some stayed home during peak times
Some long-term visitors reported that they planned to withdraw during the expected peak times of the upcoming festival in Pattaya. Online forum discussions also mentioned that this could mean less money being spent in the city.
Others deliberately chose alternatives and avoided the main days to escape stress and potentially risky situations. This indicated that the mood among guests was far from uniform.
Dangerous situations in road traffic
Some observers viewed road safety as particularly critical when water throwing might hit moving traffic. Reports described how sudden bursts of water aimed at motorcycle riders could trigger dangerous moments.
One visitor voiced a specific fear about the festival period:
“I am afraid that during the festival someone could throw a bucket of ice water against my chest, which would almost make me lose control.”
said an unnamed visitor.
Such expectations reinforced concerns about possible accidents. The combination of water attacks and ongoing traffic was seen by some as a serious risk.
Alcohol, crowds and lack of control as key criticisms

“drunken nightmare”
said unnamed commenters. that should be best avoided. People cited excessive drinking, reckless behavior and a perceived lack of control.
Several visitors said they would prefer to leave Pattaya entirely during the holidays or head for quieter destinations. As an alternative, Bangkok was also mentioned in some of the feedback.
Between party image and safety expectations
Despite the criticism, many visitors continued to enjoy Songkran responsibly, and the festival still drew large numbers of Thai and international tourists. Pattaya therefore remained a key attraction during the holiday period.
The feedback, however, pointed to a widening gap: while some visitors sought the exuberant atmosphere, others became increasingly cautious because of what they saw as excessive behavior. For a city dependent on tourism, maintaining a balance between party culture, safety and overall comfort remained crucial.
