Smart Crossing Test Fails in Pattaya

Mayor’s public safety demo exposes deep traffic culture problems

PATTAYA, THAILAND – A live safety test of a new high-tech pedestrian crossing in Pattaya failed when motorists ignored the red light, leaving the mayor standing in the road.

High-tech crossing fails live safety test

The city’s Mayor Poramet Ngampichet had planned to personally demonstrate the new “smart pedestrian crossing” on North Pattaya Road in front of Terminal 21. The system featured LED lights, sensors and a timer designed to make crossing safer.

When he stepped toward the intersection, nothing happened as intended. Cars continued to roll through the red light while motorcycles wove between the vehicles.

Witness describes an embarrassing scene

One eyewitness said the demonstration turned into an awkward spectacle.

“He just stood there and waited. The cars did not stop. It was extremely embarrassing.”

said a witness. Some drivers even accelerated although the light was already red.

Tourists confused and unsettled

International visitors, for whom the crossing was primarily installed, appeared particularly unsettled. They hesitated, stepped back and did not trust the new technology.

Instead of providing safety, the high-tech intersection only created confusion and danger. Images showed uncertain holidaymakers standing in front of a flashing but effectively useless light display.

Mayor admits system is not working

Rather than defending the technology, Mayor Poramet chose an unusually candid approach and acknowledged that the system was not functioning as intended.

“Drivers continue to ignore the signals. This exposes pedestrians, especially tourists, to an unacceptable risk.”

said Poramet, calling it a rare admission for a politician.

His comments confirmed what local residents had been saying for years: expensive technology was useless without enforcement of traffic rules.

Focus shifts to Pattaya’s traffic culture

Observers pointed out that the real scandal was not the blinking signal itself, but Pattaya’s broader traffic culture, where rules often seemed to be treated as optional suggestions. Without consistent police checks and penalties, even the most advanced systems risked becoming mere decoration.

Online users mocked the project as nothing more than a “light show project”. They argued the city invested in high-tech while failing at the basics of public education and enforcement of traffic regulations.

Setback for a city selling safety

For a destination that wanted to present itself as a modern and safe place to visit, the failed test represented a serious setback. The credibility of the local authorities suffered in the eyes of residents and visitors alike.

Instead of more technology initiatives, citizens were now calling for fundamental solutions, including more traffic education, stronger police presence and clear signals for drivers. According to the report, the mayor learned that technology could not replace human behaviour, and that Pattaya’s core traffic problem sat behind the wheel, not in the signal controller.

Uncertain future for the ‘smart’ crossing

City leaders now faced an awkward decision over whether to invest further millions in technology that drivers did not respect. An alternative was to redirect funds toward traffic education campaigns and to station officers at the crossing, which residents demanded as the priority.

One thing appeared certain: video of the mayor waiting in vain at the crossing was likely to haunt Pattaya for some time. The scene had already become a symbol of failed traffic policy in the city.
