PHUKET, THAILAND – Police in Patong arrested seven foreign tourists after a viral video showed a group surrounding a van driver and splashing him with water during Songkran celebrations.

The Phuket police said they detained seven foreign visitors after a clip shared on social networks drew widespread attention. The footage reportedly showed a group encircling a van driver in Patong and dousing him with water.
According to authorities, the incident took place during the Thai New Year water festival and resulted in a public disturbance. Officials stated that the situation also caused traffic disruption in the busy resort town.

Patong Police Station reported that the incident occurred on Prachanukhro Road near the Malin Market. The tourists had been playing with water in the area when the confrontation with the van driver unfolded.
Officers said the group engaged in water play in a way that disturbed public order. Their actions also obstructed traffic along the road, prompting concern from authorities.
Police respond to complaints
Police intervened after receiving complaints about the behaviour on the street. Officers first issued warnings to those involved, according to the statement from Patong Police.
When the situation did not improve, all seven individuals were arrested. They were accused of
“causing nuisance to others.”
