Seaplanes Set to Transform Thai Island Travel

Test Flights to Begin in October

Thailand is poised to enter a new era of air travel as the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AeroThai) prepares to launch seaplane trials in Phuket and Trang from October to November 2025. If successful, the first official seaplane routes connecting the islands could commence as early as mid-2026—a potential game-changer for both tourists and locals.

Mallika Jirapunvanit, Deputy Minister of Transport, unveiled these ambitious plans, emphasizing that all operations will initially be conducted in a controlled “sandbox” environment. The trials will focus on environmental impact, including effects on coral reefs, noise pollution from propellers and engines, and the risk of oil leaks.

Should the test phase proceed without major issues, regular seaplane services could begin by mid-2026. Two private companies are already prepared, with the necessary aircraft ready to service the island routes.

What the Seaplane Service Will Offer

The proposed seaplane network promises a new dimension of travel in Thailand:

  • Connections between airports and islands
  • Direct island-to-island flights
  • Significantly reduced travel times
  • Enhanced support for maritime tourism

Instead of enduring hours-long boat journeys, travelers could soon hop between islands in just minutes. For remote islands lacking airport infrastructure, this could be a transformative development.

Ministry’s Five-Point Plan

The Ministry of Transport has outlined a clear roadmap for AeroThai:

  1. Expand aviation infrastructure with new technologies
  2. Modernize flight routes and airspace management
  3. Integrate operational and technological strategies
  4. Lay the groundwork for future transport solutions
  5. Collaborate closely with aviation authorities and the private sector

Coordination with major airports such as Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, and Phuket is considered essential to the plan’s success.

What’s at Stake for Thailand?

The introduction of seaplanes could have a lasting impact on Thailand’s tourism sector. Not only would established destinations like Phuket and Krabi benefit, but lesser-known islands in Trang and Satun could also see improved accessibility.

However, environmental concerns remain a top priority. The upcoming trials will determine whether the dream of seaplane travel can coexist with Thailand’s natural beauty. The country’s travel landscape may soon be on the verge of an exciting transformation.
