PHUKET, THAILAND – A Russian citizen was arrested in Karon on 4 April for allegedly working illegally as a tour guide while staying in Thailand on a DTV visa that does not permit employment.
Arrest in Karon ahead of Songkran
Tourist police detained the man on 4 April in the Karon area of Phuket, according to the authorities. The operation took place shortly before the busy Songkran holiday period.
Officials stated that the arrest formed part of routine inspections carried out in the run-up to the Songkran travel season. These checks were aimed at identifying irregularities in the local tourism sector.
DTV visa allows stay, not work
According to the tourist police, the man was in Thailand on a DTV visa, which allows a stay in the country but does not permit employment. The visa conditions explicitly barred him from taking up any form of paid work.
Despite this limitation, he was alleged to have independently organized and conducted tours without holding the necessary authorizations. Authorities said he did so in violation of the terms attached to his visa.
No guide licence or work permit
