PATHUM THANI, THAILAND – A 28-year-old man robbed an elderly shopkeeper at gunpoint with a fake pistol and was arrested just hours later, police said.
Robbery of elderly shop owner
Police reported that Peerawit “Mos” entered the shop of 68-year-old Bunyanuch in Pathum Thani and pulled out a fake pistol. He threatened the woman and demanded valuables, then forced her to reveal the password to her banking app.
Seconds later, about 2,600 baht disappeared from her account, according to officers. The robber then took another 3,700 baht in cash from the register, pushed the traumatized woman into the toilet and locked the door from the outside before fleeing on his motorcycle.
Rapid police response
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant just three hours after the robbery. They located Mos at the Happy Apartment complex in Sam Khok district, where he initially resisted and tried to escape before officers subdued him.
During a search of his room, police seized the full set of items allegedly used in the crime: the clothing he had worn, a black full-face helmet, a black shoulder bag, the plastic pistol, 640 baht in cash and a gold-colored Buddha ring.
Full confession and alleged motive
During questioning, the suspect quickly admitted the robbery. According to police, he explained that he had been unable to pay an instalment on his motorcycle and wanted to use the stolen money to buy a birthday cake for his girlfriend.
Officers carried out a reconstruction of the crime at the scene and then handed the suspect over to the prosecutor’s office. He now faced possible long-term imprisonment on charges of robbery, coercion and unlawful detention.
Victim left with lasting trauma
While the suspect remained in pre-trial detention, the 68-year-old shop owner had to cope with the psychological impact of the attack. Being threatened with what she believed was a real weapon, forced to disclose her banking password and locked in a toilet was described as a deeply traumatic experience for the senior.
The case underscored how ruthlessly some offenders acted, police in Pathum Thani stated. They said the swift arrest showed that in Thailand there was no escape for criminals of this kind.
Debate over desperation and violence
The incident also raised questions locally about how financial distress could lead to violent crime. A young man with a fake weapon and an elderly woman fearing for her life prompted renewed discussion over whether any personal motive could be seen as an excuse for such actions.
