Rhino Horns Seized at Bangkok’s Airport

Arrest at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Thai Customs officials made a significant arrest at Suvarnabhumi Airport, seizing rhino horns valued at 6.9 million Baht (about £153,000). The suspect, a Vietnamese national, was caught on 6 September during a routine passenger risk assessment.

Passenger Profile Triggered Search

The man had travelled from Luanda, Angola, transiting through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, before arriving in Bangkok. His final destination was Vientiane, Laos. Customs flagged him as a high-risk passenger based on detailed data analysis, prompting a luggage search. Officers uncovered five rhino horn pieces weighing a total of 6.86 kilograms.

Laws and International Cooperation

The seizure falls under multiple laws, including the Thai Customs Act 2017 and the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act 2019. It also aligns with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Authorities stressed that wildlife trafficking poses not only ecological but also public health risks.

Customs Chief Orders Crackdown

Customs Chief Teerachai Atthanavanich has directed stricter enforcement against illegal wildlife and plant trade. Panthong Loikuln, Customs spokesperson, underlined the agency’s cooperation with domestic and international partners to enhance data sharing and risk profiling.

Global Impact of Wildlife Trafficking

The case highlights the complex networks behind wildlife smuggling and the importance of global collaboration. Each successful interception disrupts illicit markets and delivers a warning to traffickers that their crimes will not go unpunished.
