PATTAYA, THAILAND – Police in Chonburi raided an illegal cockfighting arena in Nong Prue and detained 98 people after a weeks-long undercover investigation.
Large-scale raid on Thung Klom Club grounds
Under the command of district chief Patcharapatch Sritanyanont, a large contingent of police and administrative officers moved in on the Thung Klom Club grounds in Nong Prue. Investigators had conducted covert surveillance for several weeks before the operation.
An insider later explained the focus of the probe:
“We knew that large-scale illegal bets were being placed here.”
said an insider.
Panic as officers sealed off escape routes
When the officers arrived, they were met by a surreal scene, with more than 100 vehicles parked around the arena. As the first officials appeared, panic broke out and gamblers tried to flee in all directions.
Their escape attempts failed, however, after police had already blocked off the surrounding area:
“The entire area had already been sealed off.”
said a police spokesperson.
98 suspects detained and taken to station
In total, officers stopped 81 men and 17 women, all of whom were taken to Nong Prue Police Station for formal processing. They faced possible charges of illegal gambling and operating a prohibited cockfighting venue.
Authorities did not comment on any additional suspects, stating only that the investigation was ongoing.
Evidence of organized gambling network
Inside the arena, police found two roosters ready to fight, a complete fighting ring and numerous betting tools. Cash boxes and betting ledgers were seized as evidence of a well-organized gambling network.
All items, including the equipment and documents, were secured as evidence, and the alleged operator of the facility was also arrested.
Authorities signal zero tolerance
Officials said the raid underscored that illegal gambling activities would not be tolerated in Chonburi.
“We will continue to consistently pursue such places.”
said a senior official.
For the 98 detainees, a lengthy legal process now lay ahead, while the confiscated roosters were expected to face a safer future away from the fighting ring.
