SI RACHA, THAILAND – An evening in Si Racha turned into a nightmare when a powerbank exploded in a woman’s handbag and set her clothes on fire.
Powerbank exploded without warning
Around 7 p.m. on 3 January in the Sahapat Airport area of Si Racha, a woman had placed her phone powerbank in her handbag to charge her mobile phone. Without any prior signs of malfunction, the device suddenly exploded inside the bag. The phone itself remained intact, but the flames immediately engulfed the contents of the handbag.
“The clothes caught fire immediately and spread incredibly fast.”
said an eyewitness.
Bystanders rush to save burning victim
The injured woman ran, wrapped in flames, towards the entrance of a nearby market to seek help. Market vendor Suphang Kaewwan (33) and drinks seller Kritsaphon Wisetnakorn (46) became rescuers in an instant. They and other bystanders extinguished the fire with water until emergency responders from the Sawang Prateep rescue center arrived.
Rescue operation and serious injuries
Paramedics found the woman suffering from burn injuries and provided first aid at the scene. She was then taken for further treatment to Phyathai Hospital. Alongside the physical harm, personal documents and the entire handbag were destroyed in the blaze, leaving the victim in deep shock.
“Such accidents can happen without any warning at all.”
said a rescue worker, describing the harrowing scene.
Warnings over cheap and counterfeit powerbanks
Witnesses issued an urgent appeal to the public following the incident.
“Use only powerbanks that meet safety standards!”
they said. Cheap noname batteries or counterfeit branded products were described as posing a major risk of fire and explosion, turning small savings into potentially life-threatening danger.
Simple precautions to reduce battery risks
Experts recommended basic but crucial safety measures when using rechargeable batteries. They advised buying batteries only from reputable brands and authorised dealers, especially in Thailand’s markets for low-cost electronics. Powerbanks should never be left charging unattended or placed on flammable surfaces such as beds or sofas, because heat is the greatest enemy of the battery.
Thermal runaway risk in bags and pockets
Users were also urged never to carry out the charging process inside a bag. The heat generated during charging cannot escape, which can lead to the feared “thermal runaway” reaction. In this state, rising temperatures inside the battery can rapidly trigger fire or explosion without clear external warning.
Wake-up call for locals and tourists
The Si Racha incident was described as a dramatic wake-up call for anyone who views small powerbanks as harmless everyday items. The danger may be lurking in millions of handbags and backpacks. For tourists in Thailand, the message was underscored as particularly important, as the temptation to buy a cheap replacement battery at the beach could come with even greater risk.
Call for tighter market controls
According to the account, Thai consumer protection authorities were urged to increase oversight of the electronics market. Until stricter controls and standards are in place, safety remains largely in the hands of each individual user. The incident raised questions about how many similar accidents might go unreported before comprehensive measures are introduced.
