PHUKET, THAILAND – Nightlife operators on the resort island alleged systematic extortion by government officials and pressed the provincial governor to launch an immediate investigation.
Petition from Phuket nightlife sector
The vice president of the Patong Beach Entertainment Venue Association, Apichet Phulsong, appeared at the provincial hall with around 30 members representing the nightlife sector. They handed over a petition calling for an investigation into persistent corruption rumors affecting venues across the island. The group said it spoke for more than 400 businesses.
“The rumors are causing fear and undermining confidence in the tourism sector.”
said business leaders in their urgent appeal.
Allegations of disguised officials and bribe demands
According to the petitioners, officials, in some cases allegedly disguised as “special operation forces,” were said to have demanded bribes from bar and shop owners. One operator told local outlet KhaoSod about overlapping inspections during the New Year holidays, which created confusion and fear among businesses. The requested “monthly fees” were said to add up to millions of baht across the island.
Authorities promise to forward complaint
Monchai Saelao, director of the Damrongtham Center, received the petition at the provincial hall. He pledged to pass the complaint on to the governor without delay so that it could be considered at the highest provincial level. A thorough investigation was expected to ensure fairness for law-abiding businesses, although no specific names were made public.
So far, authorities had not confirmed the allegations, and a formal investigative procedure was still pending. Officials had yet to clarify how any probe would be conducted or which agencies might be involved.
Growing confidence among business owners
Rumors about irregular payments had circulated in local media for some time before the petition was filed. Now, organized businesses were openly pushing back against what they described as a money-making scheme at their expense. The move was seen as a sign of growing confidence among entrepreneurs, who said they feared for the image of Phuket as a safe travel destination.

said Apichet Phulsong, summarizing the association’s position and stressing that patience within the industry had run out.
Delicate test for the governor
For the governor, the complaint posed a delicate balancing act between demonstrating the integrity of the administration and avoiding a sweeping crackdown in one of the island’s most important sectors. The outcome of any investigation was expected to send a clear signal on whether Thailand backed lawful tourism or tolerated “bad apples” within the system. Business leaders warned that the reputation of the wider Thai tourism industry was now at stake.
Inspections or cash collection?
Operators said the sudden appearance of so-called “special units,” unclear lines of responsibility and simultaneous monetary demands were damaging for any tourism destination. Phuket’s nightlife, they argued, depended on trust, planning certainty and clear rules that are applied consistently. Rumors of monthly payments in the millions not only hit individual operators, but also threatened the image of the entire island.
At the heart of the dispute was a single question for the sector and authorities alike: was this about maintaining order and safety, or about a system that had slipped out of control?
