PHUKET, Thailand – A parliamentary committee probing controversial land disputes on the island has intensified its investigation into blocked beaches, illegal fees, and deforestation, with consequences now looming.
Second Day on Site – The Sensitive Beaches
The delegation, led by Arsapol Sorntraiphop, included Deputy Preeti Charoensilp, spokesperson Thanathan Pramoonpong, and People’s Party MP Chalermpong Saengdee. Following a meeting with provincial authorities at the town hall, they inspected Nui Beach and Freedom Beach. Residents and tourists had previously lodged numerous complaints. The accusations included blocked access ways, unauthorized collection of entry fees, and the clearing of protected forest areas.
Nui Beach – Blocked Paths and Questionable Land Use
At Nui Beach, the investigators specifically focused on the obstructed access routes and the levied entrance fees. Land use in the area is managed by the Office of Agricultural Reform, which remains under legal review. For tourists seeking simple beach access, the situation was deemed a clear imposition. The committee gathered evidence and conducted interviews on-site.
Freedom Beach – 24 Cases of Forest Destruction
The situation at Freedom Beach appeared even more grim. 24 registered cases of forest clearing, coupled with persistent complaints about illegal toll collection and safety risks, raised significant alarm. During the monsoon season, several drowning incidents had already occurred. The committee urged the relevant authorities to enhance safety protocols and finally erect warning signs in high-risk areas.
Nine Parcels – Two Titles Revoked
The land registry office recorded nine land parcels at Freedom Beach. Courts have already revoked two property titles due to unlawful issuance. The remaining seven titles are now undergoing thorough examination. Local residents submitted additional petitions concerning land rights and usage, which the committee is pursuing.
15-Day Deadline – Legal Steps Loom
Arsapol issued a clear directive to the authorities: all relevant documents must be provided for analysis within 15 days. Those who delay or attempt to conceal information will face repercussions. The chairman announced decisive legal action against any unlawful title issuance, dereliction of duty, or violation of the law.
