Phayao: Man Dies After Falling Into Open Hole

Man Dies After Falling Into Hole on Farm Road in Phayao

Authorities are investigating after a 64-year-old man tragically fell into a hole on a farm road in Phayao province shortly after midday on September 6. The incident occurred on the agricultural road leading to Ban San Luang, Moo 10, Thung Ruang Thong sub-district, Jun district. Police from Jun station were alerted at 12:35, along with medics from Jun Hospital and rescue teams from the Guan U Foundation and Krai Thong disaster prevention unit. Rescue personnel arrived promptly to secure the scene and recover the victim safely.

Rescue Operation and Preliminary Findings

Rescuers discovered the victim, later identified as Mr. Sawat Boontham, head first at the bottom of the hole, partially submerged in water. Family members assisted the rescue workers in retrieving the body using a rope tied around his legs. The hole measured approximately 2.5 metres deep and was just wide enough for a person to fall in. A preliminary examination revealed that Mr. Boontham had suffered a broken neck from the fall, with no other signs of foul play detected on the body at the scene.

Community Concerns and Ongoing Investigation

The body was released to the family for funeral rites in accordance with local tradition. Residents have since urged authorities to inspect the site and install safety measures, warning that the hole is a hidden hazard on a route regularly used by villagers. Officials confirmed that an investigation will determine who dug the hole and why it was left exposed so close to the road. Authorities aim to prevent further accidents and identify anyone responsible for the dangerous condition.
