Pattaya, Thailand – Two young delivery riders were assaulted and beaten by a group of teenagers at a popular Pattaya viewpoint on October 7, police said, and two suspects were arrested the same night.
Ambush at a viewpoint
The attack unfolded at the Laem Bali Hai viewpoint in South Pattaya when two delivery riders, identified in reports only as “Mr A”, 22, and “Mr B”, 21, were confronted by a group of youths. Officers said the assailants struck the men with what turned out to be a BB-gun and a toy pistol, using the imitation firearm as a bludgeon. The victims suffered physical injuries and were left shaken by the incident.
Night-time arrests and evidence
Police acted late the same night. At 23:46 a special unit led by Police Lieutenant Orus Sathanan, deputy head of crime suppression at Pattaya City Police Station, detained two suspects at the scene: Thanaphat, 18, and Hasanai Yiengkhuncheaw, 20. Officers recovered a BB-gun and a toy pistol, which investigators said had been used to strike the victims. Authorities said Thanaphat had hidden one of the weapons under a motorcycle seat.
Probation breach and background
The arrest drew attention because Thanaphat was wearing an electronic ankle monitor. He was on probation while awaiting trial on an earlier attempted murder charge, after a shooting and involvement in a mass brawl at Jomtien Beach, police said. In a post-arrest statement quoted by investigators, Thanaphat admitted there had been prior trouble between the groups and described how the confrontation escalated: “We had already had trouble with their group. When the two intervened I hit one with the weapon. He did not faint — he got up and we started to fight.”
Suspect account and police response
Hasanai attempted to downplay the attack, telling officers the riders were not “innocent” and alleging they belonged to the same social circle. He said the BB-gun had been borrowed “for fun” from a friend. Police rejected those justifications. Lieutenant Orus Sathanan said investigators would not accept violence as a response to online disputes or provocations and stressed that even imitation weapons used as assault tools were taken seriously.
Charges and likely consequences
Both suspects face charges of assault and illegal possession of imitation firearms. Police indicated Thanaphat could also face revocation of his probation; that decision will rest with the courts. Authorities said they would carry out a thorough inquiry into the incident and the wider pattern of youth violence in the tourist city.
Wider concerns
Pattaya relies heavily on tourism, and officials warned that violent incidents involving youths could harm the city’s image. The case raised questions about whether electronic monitoring and probation conditions were sufficient to prevent repeat offending. For the victims, officers said, the physical wounds might heal but the psychological impact of the attack at a once-popular viewpoint could last longer.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident or about wider youth violence in the area to come forward as investigators pursue leads.
