Pattaya AI leads to motorcycle arrests

Tourist police say an AI camera network identified three men linked to mule bank accounts in Pattaya

PATTAYA, THAILAND – On the evening of October 20, 2025, a new artificial intelligence camera system in Pattaya detected three men on a motorcycle and triggered a swift police operation that ended in their arrest.

AI detection triggers rapid arrest

The city’s tourist police said the AI-driven camera, part of the “AI Detect” network, identified the three men in Banglamung district and automatically sent an alert to the police control centre. Officers located the blue Yamaha Fino motorcycle minutes later near the Bali-Hai-Pier bridge in South Pattaya and detained the occupants under the bridge.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phuek-am, commander of the Tourist Police, described the action as a test of how modern AI tools can support frontline policing, saying the operation demonstrated how quickly and precisely such systems can work in real cases.

Suspects, charges and alleged role in fraud network

Police identified the detainees as Suphawit Saisut, 20; Wayu Salae, 21; and Phanuwat Homfang, 20. All three were wanted on warrants issued by the Bangkok Criminal Court on charges including organised fraud, inputting false data into computer systems and assisting technology-related crimes.

Investigators said the suspects had been sought for months by the Metropolitan Police Bureau in Bangkok and were believed to be linked to a larger nationwide network that organises so-called “mule accounts” — bank accounts opened for use in money laundering and online fraud.

During questioning, the men allegedly admitted opening multiple bank accounts for Bangkok-based brokers, receiving 2,000 baht (about 50 euros) for each account. They told investigators they were indebted and looking for work in Pattaya and claimed they did not know the accounts would be used for criminal activity.

Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to Bang Sue police station in Bangkok for further interrogation as authorities seek to identify the organisers behind the scheme.

Technology rollout and operational support

The AI camera system was first installed around Walking Street, one of Pattaya’s busiest tourist areas, and the network has been expanded to cover growing parts of the city. Police said the system had previously been used mainly to detect foreign visitors overstaying their visas, but the recent arrest shows it can also track domestic suspects in real time, even while they are moving quickly.

To complement the camera network, Pattaya police have deployed high-performance drones operating around the clock. The force said drones automatically launch when an alarm is raised, providing aerial surveillance to follow suspects or assist in search and rescue operations such as locating missing tourists at sea.

Pol. Maj. Supparat Meepricha and Pol. Capt. Apichat Jarurak, lead investigators on the case, called the arrest “groundbreaking,” noting it was the first time the system identified three suspects simultaneously on a moving motorcycle and directly led to their capture.

Privacy assurances and wider implications

Police officials stressed the technology was aimed at public safety. A tourist police spokesman said, “We do not violate privacy. The goal is to stop criminals and better protect tourists.”

Saksira Phuek-am said authorities hoped the operation would send a strong signal to fraudsters using Thailand as a base that digital economic crime would no longer be a safe business. The technology, he added, has already contributed to multiple arrests in areas such as fraud, money laundering and identity theft.

Investigators said the case underlined how a combination of AI-driven cameras, drones and centralised analysis was becoming “the backbone of modern policing in tourist areas,” and that further deployments of the system were planned as part of ongoing efforts to curb organised online crime.
