KRABI, THAILAND – A foolish remark brought a flight to a standstill. A 45-year-old man called “Beware of bomb” on board an aircraft – and triggered a major operation. The man from Chonburi is now in police custody, facing up to five years in prison.
Joke stops flight to Bangkok
Late Saturday afternoon at 5:20 p.m., a plane was about to depart from Krabi to Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi. Then the unthinkable happened: A passenger placed his suitcase in the overhead bin – and whispered a fatal sentence to the flight attendant.
The man said:
“Shove it in carefully – beware of bomb.”
The stewardess was startled and asked back: “What?” The 45-year-old calmly repeated his words. The crew acted immediately – they alerted the captain.
Full-scale operation – nothing found
The pilot immediately brought the aircraft back to the parking position. All passengers had to leave the plane, every piece of luggage was unloaded. The police in Krabi called in bomb experts – the complete bomb disposal unit.
For hours, officers searched the aircraft and all suitcases. Their conclusion: no explosives, no bomb, no danger. The alleged joke turned out to be a false alarm – but the consequences were real.
Now he faces five years in prison
The police arrested the man from Chonburi province. At the station in the Nordenklong district, he was charged with intentionally spreading false information that panicked travelers. Thailand’s Aviation Act of 2015 provides for strict penalties for this.
The 45-year-old faces up to five years in prison or a fine of around 5,200 euros – or both. Before the investigators, he showed remorse: He had spoken only out of high spirits, it was a stupid joke.
Why airlines show zero tolerance
Such remarks are no trivial offense. Every alarm forces the crew to act immediately – passenger safety is top priority. Even a short sentence can disrupt an entire flight schedule and cost thousands of euros.
In Thailand, bomb threats on board are pursued especially harshly. The authorities want to send a clear signal: Anyone who makes jokes at the expense of safety must face all consequences – even if they later regret it.
