Oil Price Surge Squeezes Pattaya Boat Routes

Rising fuel costs hit Koh Larn passenger services as operators hold fares steady for now

PATTAYA, THAILAND – The escalating conflict in the Middle East pushed up oil prices and increased operating costs for excursion boats to Koh Larn, prompting operators to warn of lasting pressure while keeping fares unchanged so far.

Oil price shock reaches Pattaya Bay

Recent surcharges on international crude oil had raised fuel expenses in recent weeks for businesses that relied daily on diesel and gasoline. In Pattaya, this development put particular pressure on the passenger boats that carried tourists back and forth to nearby Koh Larn (Coral Island).

Boat services as a quiet pillar of the tourism chain

Crossings to Koh Larn formed part of the basic infrastructure of local tourism, as many day visitors did not plan a beach trip without using a boat. Rising operating costs for these services therefore quickly affected other sectors, including beach offerings, restaurants and activities that depended on a steady flow of visitors.

Operators report higher costs and temporary shortages

Boat entrepreneur Rueangrit Ngoen Phiam, owner of the passenger service Phuang Phayom, reported noticeably higher expenses due to elevated oil prices. Temporary fuel shortages had also complicated deployment planning, because fleet management and timetables then had to be adjusted at short notice.

Fares held steady out of consideration for passengers

Despite the wave of higher costs, operators so far had refrained from increasing per-person fares, in order not to place an additional burden on tourists. According to information from industry circles, both Thai and international visitors continued to travel to Koh Larn in stable numbers, so services remained “as usual” at normal capacity.

Fare hikes likely if pressure continues

At the same time, operators indicated that fare adjustments would hardly be avoidable if the oil price stayed high or rose further. What was still being cushioned today from reserves or with tight margins could, under persistently expensive fuel, turn into a question of the economic viability of individual services.

Risk for Pattaya’s wider economy

The situation affected not only individual boat owners but also posed a broader risk to Pattaya’s tourism model, which relied on affordable and frequent links to excursion destinations. Even though arrivals in Pattaya had so far proved resilient, prolonged instability in the Middle East could significantly amplify the local side effects of elevated energy prices.
