PATTAYA, THAILAND – The holiday island of Koh Larn had been sinking under mountains of waste for years, prompting authorities to intervene to protect the embattled natural destination.
Island choking on trash
Behind the postcard image of white sand and blue sea, Koh Larn had turned into what officials described as a nightmare. More than 150,000 tonnes of garbage had piled up on the island, forming towering mounds of waste.
Every single day at least 25 tonnes of new rubbish were added. Tourists and residents had recently generated far more trash than the island could ever cope with.
New weapon against growing waste
Authorities responded with modern technology to confront the crisis. A new disposal centre with a state-of-the-art incineration plant began operations on the island.
The facility was able to destroy up to 50 tonnes of waste per day while meeting strict environmental standards. In this way, the existing mountain of rubbish was expected to be gradually reduced.
Rescue plan for the natural paradise
The project was a joint effort between the city administration and private partners. Its objective was clearly defined: nature on the island should no longer suffer from human activities.
Koh Larn was intended to become a place again where people could take holidays without a guilty conscience. The focus of the initiative was the elimination of accumulated trash and the ecological recovery of the island.

The clean-up drive formed part of a broader strategy for the entire region. Under concepts such as “Neo Pattaya”, decision-makers planned to transform the city and its surrounding islands on a sustainable basis.
According to local officials, only consistent protection of the environment would ensure that visitors continued to return in future. For residents, a cleaner environment was expected above all to translate into a significantly improved quality of life.
