CHACHOENGSAO, THAILAND – A 36-year-old motorcyclist died in Chachoengsao province after a cable hanging over the road reportedly wrapped around his neck, prompting an investigation into a straw truck driver and low-hanging lines.
Fatal crash on provincial road
The accident occurred on 10 February at around 8 p.m. in Bang Khla district, where officers from Bang Khla police station responded to a serious motorcycle crash. At the scene, they found the rider later identified as Thotsaphon Panya (36) in critical condition; he died despite receiving medical treatment.
Cable reported to have triggered loss of control
On the opposite lane lay his overturned Suzuki GSX 1000, registered in Bangkok. Witnesses reported that a cable had fallen onto the carriageway shortly before the collision. Initial investigations suggested the cable became entangled, causing the rider to lose control of the large motorcycle and crash.
Straw truck and disturbed overhead lines
Local resident Mr Thanaphon told police that a straw-laden truck had stopped at the spot after apparently becoming caught in cables running above the road. A man was seen handling one of the cables to allow the truck to continue its journey, and authorities examined whether this action had further destabilised the already loose cable bundle.
Previous contact by smaller motorcycles
According to eyewitnesses, two smaller motorcycles had brushed against the loosened cable before the fatal crash but their riders managed to keep control of their scooters. Under the same conditions, the significantly more powerful motorcycle ridden by Mr Thotsaphon could no longer be controlled once the cable became entangled.
Limited visibility at accident site
Witnesses stated that the crash took place in an area with restricted visibility and limited street lighting. Police documented the precise circumstances of the incident, and the case remained under active investigation. After the motorcycle was recovered, the accident site was reopened to traffic and officers secured all key witness statements.
Truck driver questioned after CCTV review
Police reviewed surveillance footage along the route and later detained 44-year-old Mr Surachet, the straw truck driver, for questioning. Surachet admitted he had been driving from Lat Bua Khao to Wang Sombun to deliver straw. Investigators examined to what extent the handling of the cable by persons engaged for this purpose may have contributed to endangering the motorcyclist.
Statement on low-hanging cables
Mr Surachet stated that the cables were already tangled and hanging low.
“I instructed a worker to lift the cables to prevent a possible risk to vehicles,”
said Surachet, truck driver. Regarding the exact sequence of events, he told officers he had not immediately recognised a link between his instructions and the subsequent fatal crash, while authorities continued to review all available evidence and testimony.
Potential charges and ongoing probe
The public prosecutor examined which criminal charges could be brought against the truck driver and any other parties involved. Allegations under review included negligence and possible violations of traffic safety regulations. Police investigations were ongoing, and provincial authorities announced a comprehensive review of road infrastructure in the region to prevent similar incidents.
Infrastructure safety and prevention measures
The case raised broader questions about monitoring and maintenance of power lines and other roadside infrastructure. Experts stressed that regular inspections of such installations were essential to minimise risks for road users. Officials said they would work with utility companies to check and secure low-hanging lines across the province in order to improve traffic safety for all motorists.
