Hua Hin, a charming coastal town with around 65,000 residents—15,000 of them foreigners—offers a wide range of housing options for different lifestyles. Many retirees naturally gravitate toward the city center, where shops, restaurants, and beaches are all within easy reach. For those seeking comfort and modern amenities, the heart of Hua Hin remains unmatched.
Northern and Southern Coastal Options
Northward lies Sampraya, part of Cha-Am, a quiet neighborhood steadily growing in popularity. It provides easy access to both Hua Hin and Cha-Am, ideal for those seeking peace without sacrificing connectivity.
Heading south, Kao Takiab features numerous hotels along the beach, but also residential options with spectacular sea views just a block back. Further south, Kao Tao offers a serene environment with near-empty beaches and small resorts. Continuing to Pranburi, the sleepy fishing village delights with authenticity and local charm—far from the hustle of central Hua Hin.
Hillside Retreats: Wang Pong, Nong Kae, Thab Tai
On the inland side, Wang Pong and Nong Kae at the end of a hill chain are popular among expats for centrality and quick beach access. Modern residential communities have developed here, offering a balance of convenience and tranquility.
Westward, Thab Tai is idyllic but still lacks infrastructure—there’s no 7-Eleven, a rarity in Thailand! Yet the natural beauty and calmness attract those looking for retreat-like living.
Hin Lek Fai, also in the west, combines excellent infrastructure with proximity to the Black Mountains golf area. Restaurants, shopping centers like Big C and Lotus, and countless 24/7 convenience shops make life easy, while the area still offers peace and green surroundings.
Choosing the Right Spot
Lifestyle preferences guide the choice. Golf enthusiasts favor Hin Lek Fai and Thab Tai, with nearby premier courses like Black Mountain, Majestic, Lakeview, and Palm Hills. Those prioritizing proximity to the sea will find Kao Takiab and Kao Tao appealing for their beaches and relaxed atmosphere, with Kao Tao offering more affordable housing.
City dwellers seeking infrastructure can’t go wrong with Hua Hin itself, particularly Soi 102, offering everything from German bakeries and Swiss butchers to Norwegian fish shops. Hin Lek Fai matches city amenities with quieter living, making it a strong contender.
Personal Choice: Hin Lek Fai
For me, Hin Lek Fai is ideal. Close to the highway to Bangkok without noise, excellent amenities, quick access to Hua Hin’s beaches, Kao Tao, or Pranburi, and numerous golf options make it highly attractive. Prices are slightly higher, but the lifestyle—peace, convenience, and sea access—is worth it. It’s a place where comfort meets calm, ideal for long-term living.
