PHAYAO, THAILAND – A German tourist was killed Friday evening on a mountain road in Phayao province when his motorcycle lost control in a bend and crashed head-on into a rock face.
Fatal fall at Triple Heaven Spot
Police from Chiang Muan district were dispatched to the Phayao–Chiang Muan route after a crash was reported on a section known as the Triple Heaven Spot. Rescue teams from the Siam-Ruamjai-Pu-In Foundation and forensic staff from Chiang Muan Hospital arrived shortly afterward.
At the scene, a large motorcycle registered in Chiang Mai with the license plate 1กภ 9101 was found lying on its side on the asphalt. A few meters away, responders discovered the rider’s lifeless body.
Group of five bikes, one does not return
According to rescue workers at the scene, the German had rented the motorcycle in Chiang Mai to explore Phayao province together with four other riders. The group was traveling with a total of five motorcycles.
Initial findings indicated that the man lost control of his vehicle in a curve and slammed with full force into the rocky base of a mountain. He died at the scene.
Investigation underway – who bears responsibility?
Chiang Muan police launched a formal investigation and contacted the German embassy to coordinate the necessary formalities. Other authorities were also involved.
It remained unclear whether excessive speed, rider error or the road layout contributed to the crash. This also left open what consequences the incident might have for popular motorcycle routes in the north.
