PHUKET, THAILAND – A 25-year-old German tourist who stole cash from a spa in Phuket was arrested after returning to apologise and now faces potentially harsh penalties under Thai law.
Theft at spa caught on camera
The incident took place on 20 January at a spa in Phuket’s Muang district, where the man, identified as Mr Laszlo, seized an unguarded moment. When the cashier stepped away briefly, he opened a drawer and took 2,000 baht in cash, roughly 50 euros.
He believed the theft would go unnoticed, but the shop’s security cameras recorded the act in full. When staff reconciled the cash register that evening, the missing money and the footage exposed what had happened.
Apology rejected, police already alerted
The following evening at around 7 p.m., the German unexpectedly returned to the spa, saying he wanted to apologise and give back the stolen money. The spa owner refused to accept it, having already notified the police, who were waiting for the suspect to appear.
Armed with a warrant from the Phuket Provincial Court, police and immigration officers arrested the 25-year-old. His holiday on the island came to an abrupt end.
Tears, remorse and a swift confession
During questioning at the police station, officers explained the charges and the potentially tough penalties for theft under Thai law. The tourist lost his composure, broke down in tears and immediately admitted what he had done.
Police said he claimed to have acted on impulse and to regret his actions deeply.

Police pursue possible accomplices
Investigations were not considered complete, as officers believed the German had not acted alone. Police were searching for two additional suspected accomplices thought to have been involved in the theft.
Their identities were still unknown, and it remained unclear whether the cooperative attitude of the confessed thief might lead to a more lenient sentence.
Harsh consequences for ‘small’ thefts
The motives behind risking a holiday and a clean record for about 50 euros remained unclear. Thai justice was described as anything but lenient in theft cases, with even minor sums potentially leading to prosecution, heavy fines or prison.
The case underscored how, in an era of pervasive surveillance cameras, petty criminal behaviour while on vacation carried significant risk.
Warning to foreign visitors in Thailand
The incident was portrayed as a clear warning to all visitors that Thai authorities did not tolerate offences by foreigners, regardless of how minor they might appear. Consequences such as arrest, charges, possible entry bans and a lasting police record were described as severe and life-long.
Experts’ advice cited in the report was unambiguous: tourists should enjoy their time in Thailand but strictly obey local laws, as the price for a moment of foolishness could be far too high.
