Garlic Load Hides Massive Meth Haul

Highway stop in Saraburi uncovers drugs worth at least 200 million baht

SARABURI, THAILAND – A routine highway stop turned into a major drug bust when police uncovered millions of meth pills hidden under a load of garlic.

Pickup on Highway 32 Raises Suspicion

Highway officers on Highway 32 near the Chai Nat overpass had been looking for a specific vehicle. A grey Isuzu pickup with Kamphaeng Phet plates, fitted with a steel frame and tarpaulin, matched the description exactly. The 42‑year‑old driver, Theerawat, appeared visibly nervous when officers signalled him to pull over.

Garlic Load Conceals Massive Drug Shipment

During a search of the cargo area, investigators noticed suspicious packages among countless garlic bulbs. Behind the vegetables, they discovered what amounted to a mobile drug warehouse: 2.19 million methamphetamine pills and 26 kilograms of crystal meth. Drug specialists estimated the street value of the seized narcotics at a minimum of 200 million baht, roughly five million euros, describing the seizure as a major blow to the drug mafia.

Courier Admits Route and Payment Deal

Confronted with the evidence, Theerawat confessed that he had collected the drugs in Chiang Rai. He told officers his destination was the Talad Thai market in Pathum Thani, and that he had deliberately avoided major checkpoints along the route to reduce the risk of detection.

“I was supposed to get 200,000 baht – but only on delivery.”

said Theerawat, the arrested driver.

Serious Charges and Potential Long Sentence

The trip now had severe consequences for the driver, who was accused of possession of Category 1 drugs with intent to sell. Thai judicial authorities classified such offences as particularly grave because they caused widespread public harm and threatened national security. A long prison term was likely, and although his confession might be taken into account, sentences for quantities of this magnitude were typically harsh.

Police Target Wider Smuggling Network

Investigations were continuing as police worked urgently to identify the wider smuggling network behind the shipment.

“We are expanding our investigations.”

said a police spokesperson. Officers sought to establish who ordered the drugs and who was meant to receive them at the market.

Highway Controls Deal Blow to Known Drug Route

Authorities noted that the trafficking route from Chiang Rai to central Thailand was well known, but this operation marked an important success for the highway patrol. The case highlighted both the impact of intensified road checks and the ingenuity of drug couriers, who had used garlic as cover for a large‑scale shipment. Police reiterated that they would maintain pressure on every courier, route and hiding method until each was eventually exposed.
