BANGKOK, THAILAND – A foreign man’s violent assault on a Thai transgender woman in Sukhumvit triggered outrage both on the street and online. The attack, captured on video and widely shared by local media, showed a disturbing sequence in which the man repeatedly struck and dragged the victim along the pavement before furious witnesses intervened.
Attack caught on camera
Footage released by ThaiRath and the Facebook page “You Know” showed the man, dressed in a black T-shirt, pushing a trans woman in a yellow dress to the ground. He kicked her several times, pulled her across the sidewalk, and continued hitting her as she screamed for help.
Several other trans women nearby shouted at the man to stop, but he ignored them. One witness, also a transgender person, tried to step in but was forced to retreat when the attacker turned toward her and threw rubbish in her direction.
Bystanders confront the attacker
The scene escalated when a group of Thai men, apparently witnessing the assault, decided to act. The video showed them chasing the foreign man and knocking him to the ground. By the end of the footage, he was lying bloodied on the pavement as one of the men scolded him for his violent behaviour toward the trans woman. The extent of his injuries remained unclear.
Police yet to comment
Authorities had not issued a statement about the incident, and investigators had not released information regarding the assailant’s identity or possible motive. Based on the video evidence, the assault appeared to have started without provocation.
Pattern of violence against transgender women
The episode followed another recent case in Phuket in which a Thai transgender woman was assaulted and robbed by a Pakistani man she met through a dating app. In that case, police arrested the suspect at Suvarnabhumi International Airport before he could leave the country.
Although Thailand is often perceived as accepting of LGBTQ+ individuals, transgender people continue to face acts of violence, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. The latest attack in Sukhumvit has reignited online debate about safety and justice for the community.
Public reaction
Videos of the confrontation spread rapidly on Thai social media, with many users condemning the foreign man’s actions and others questioning the vigilantism of the bystanders. The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter measures and clearer protections for transgender people and for stronger accountability in cases involving foreign nationals.
