KOH SAMUI, THAILAND – A major fire ripped through Fisherman’s Village on Koh Samui, destroying several shops and badly damaging a restaurant’s upper floor, but leaving all people unharmed.
Tourist promenade turned into debris field
The blaze broke out on 16 February in the pedestrian zone of Fisherman’s Village in Bo Phut, Surat Thani province, quickly turning one of the island’s busiest tourist strips into a field of debris, according to authorities. Thick black smoke rose over the sea as tourists and residents fled the narrow alleys, while three shops were completely destroyed and the upper floor of a restaurant suffered severe damage.
Fire started in women’s fashion store
The fire originated on the second floor of the women’s clothing shop Saona Collection, where large quantities of fabric were stored and allowed the flames to spread rapidly. Within minutes, the fire moved sideways to the neighbouring tailor shop Gino’s Tailor, the adjacent Samui Armani store and the upper floor of the Luna restaurant.
Panic during market preparations
As vendors were setting up their stalls for the evening market, the air filled with smoke and tourists ran disoriented through the cramped lanes, leaving numerous stalls behind in haste. Inside the affected shops, mannequins and extensive textile stocks were left behind and were completely consumed by the flames.
Large-scale response from multiple agencies
Bo Phut police station received the emergency call and immediately alerted response units, prompting the disaster prevention offices of Koh Samui municipality and the province, fire crews from Samui Airport and rescue teams from the Wat Plai Laem Foundation to rush to the scene. Several fire engines and private water tankers were brought into the densely built-up zone, while the provincial electricity authority cut power to allow the safe use of firefighting water.
Narrow alleys slowed firefighting
Access for larger fire trucks was hampered by the narrow streets and tightly packed buildings, with market equipment and stalls blocking the way and thick bundles of power and communication cables hanging over the roads. Only after the power had been shut off could firefighters fully deploy their hoses, but heavy smoke reduced visibility and slowed their advance to the seat of the fire.
Shops gutted, no casualties reported
After about an hour, crews brought the fire under control, but the tailoring and fashion shops were almost completely burned out, with interiors and goods charred beyond recognition and the restaurant’s upper floor heavily damaged by fire and smoke. Authorities underlined that there were no injuries or fatalities, as tourists and staff had been evacuated in time and rescue teams searched the buildings before the wider area was cordoned off.
Investigation focuses on possible short circuit
Police sealed off the site to the public after the firefighting operation and admitted only investigators and forensic specialists to secure evidence and systematically examine the debris. Initial indications pointed to a possible short circuit as the trigger, but officials stressed that only a forensic report would determine the exact cause and that the area would remain closed until then.
Economic hit for a key tourist hub
Fisherman’s Village was regarded as one of the island’s most frequented tourist centres, and business along the entire street came to an abrupt halt during the blaze, with many surrounding establishments temporarily closing for safety reasons. Official estimates of property damage were not yet available, but the destruction of stocks and buildings was considered substantial, and owners were expected to work closely with investigators and insurers in the coming days.
Authorities highlight coordinated response
Officials emphasised that coordinated action by the various rescue and disaster prevention services prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the densely built tourist strip. The 16 February blaze was still seen as a serious incident in a central commercial district of Surat Thani province, and the investigation into the suspected electrical cause continued.
