BANGKOK, THAILAND – An internationally sought tax fraud suspect was apprehended by Thai police using an unconventional disguise.
The Cautious Fugitive
Investigators posed as gardeners to capture the 69-year-old Finn outside his hideout after he attempted to warn them about power cables. The fugitive, identified as Jacob, a 69-year-old Finnish citizen, had been holed up in a residential building near Suvarnabhumi Airport. He had fortified his dwelling with cardboard and various materials to obstruct prying eyes. Jacob rarely left his residence, relying on food deliveries and exhibiting extreme suspicion towards strangers, as officers from Immigration Bureau 3 discovered.
He consistently refused to open his door to anyone unfamiliar.
The Gardener’s Ruse
Investigators, led by Police Major General Songprod Sirisukha, uncovered a crucial habit of the fugitive during their interrogations. Whenever trees were being pruned in the communal area outside the house, Jacob would emerge to caution workers about overhead power lines. This vulnerability was skillfully exploited by the officers.
They disguised themselves as gardeners working for the residential project and began tree-trimming operations. True to form, the Finn emerged from his sanctuary to issue them a warning.
Handcuffs Instead of Hedge Trimmers
As soon as Jacob opened his door, the supposed landscapers immediately revealed themselves as police officers and presented him with an international arrest warrant from Interpol. The man was swiftly taken into custody. The Interpol warrant stems from a serious fraud case, where the Finn is accused of tax evasion, tax avoidance, and the falsification of accounting data, resulting in a financial loss exceeding 4 million Baht.
The Finnish national had initially resided in Chonburi province before relocating closer to the airport. He had systematically sealed off his new home to avoid detection. Later that same day, the Immigration Bureau revoked his residence permit and initiated deportation proceedings to his home country. The Finn is now expected to face trial in Finland.
