BANGKOK, THAILAND – A Filipina tourist issued an online apology after a viral video criticizing English skills in Thailand sparked a fierce social media backlash.
From viral rant to deleted clip
In an earlier clip that was later removed, Ann Berdin vented her frustration about communication problems during her stay.
“No one in Thailand seems to understand English,”
said Berdin, referring to Grab drivers and local residents.
The Thai online community reacted angrily to the remarks. Popular influencer Crispy Froid also weighed in, calling for greater cultural sensitivity from visiting tourists.
Damage control in a Facebook apology
In a Facebook apology video, Berdin tried to limit the fallout from the controversy.
“I did not mean anything hateful toward Thailand,”
said Berdin, insisting that her comments had been misunderstood.
She argued that her remark about needing a translator had not been meant as mockery. She added that she herself used translation apps and had friends who spoke little English.
“For me there is nothing wrong with the video I made. I just explained my experience. I think I used the wrong words.”
said Berdin.
Partial admission of mistakes
Berdin acknowledged shortcomings on her own side, but only up to a point. She admitted that her English was not perfect, while stressing that her statement had been made in good faith.
“I admit I am not good enough in English, but at least I can speak and understand a little bit.”
said Berdin.
She accepted that her tone or phrasing might have come across badly. If anyone felt offended, she said, she apologized.
Split reactions from social media users
Online responses to the apology remained sharply divided. One user urged greater care from visitors, writing:
“Please be mindful of what you say, especially in another country. If you can afford to travel, you should also learn the local language and culture.”
said a social media user.
Another voice showed more understanding of the linguistic challenges involved.
“It is easy to express something wrongly in a second language. People often do not ask before reacting negatively.”
said another commenter.
Many, however, kept a hard line. One critical response read:
“Your feelings may be valid, but your behavior is unacceptable. I hope this experience has taught you humility.”
said a third user.
Lessons from an online storm
The case underlined the power of public opinion on the internet. A single careless statement proved enough to trigger a cross-border wave of outrage.
For tourists, observers noted, the episode served as a warning that criticism of a host country should be phrased respectfully and with nuance. Otherwise, online sentiment could quickly turn hostile.
Thailand in particular has grown sensitive to condescending behavior by foreigners, highlighted recently by a case involving an Italian visitor who insulted a local taxi driver.
