PATONG, THAILAND – A Japanese tourist who falsely claimed to have been robbed in Patong was sentenced to six months in prison after Thai authorities exposed his fabricated story.
Alleged street robbery on Thaworn Road
A not-yet-identified Japanese tourist reported to Patong Police on 2 January 2026, around 8 p.m., that he had been the victim of a handbag snatch on Thaworn Road. Such snatch-and-grab thefts were known in the tourist area, so officers treated the complaint as serious and immediately opened an investigation. Detectives reviewed surveillance cameras and interviewed witnesses, but soon developed major doubts as no evidence of an assault emerged.
Story collapses under police questioning
Investigators found no signs of a struggle and no forensic traces to support the report, and the tourist’s account began to fall apart.
