PATTAYA, THAILAND – A heavily intoxicated Russian tourist was arrested in Pattaya after he allegedly attacked a Thai woman outside a shopping mall, where passersby restrained him before police arrived.
Alleged attack outside Pattaya shopping mall
According to Pol. Lt. Jittisuk Suthinitthawong, deputy inspector with the patrol unit of the Pattaya City Police, officers were called at around 9:15 p.m. on 11 February to an incident in front of a shopping mall on Pattaya Second Road in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. Callers reported a severely drunk foreigner who had allegedly attacked and injured a Thai woman. Police responded quickly, but members of the public had already intervened before officers reached the scene.
Witness: woman knocked to the ground
Motorbike taxi driver Prawanwit Somanat, 20, said he had arrived to pick up a female Thai customer. At first he only noticed an argument between the Russian and another foreigner and did not expect any trouble. When his customer returned from a nearby convenience store and attempted to get on his motorcycle, the Russian man allegedly approached and a physical assault followed, causing the woman to suffer injuries and fall to the ground.
The witness described the man’s behavior as extremely aggressive and out of control. After the assault, the man reportedly stood in the middle of the roadway, disrupted public order and reacted aggressively to attempts by others to help, according to witnesses.
Bystanders overpower the suspect
Outraged people at the scene, including local residents, motorbike taxi drivers and tourists, ended the disturbance by overpowering and restraining the approximately 30‑year‑old Russian until police and rescue workers arrived. Their swift action was credited with bringing the situation under control. Police stated the man was visibly agitated and under the influence of alcohol when they reached the location.
Reports of earlier harassment in the area
An employee of a nearby traditional massage shop said the man had previously been seen in the area in a heavily intoxicated state and had harassed people. Several witnesses confirmed that his aggressive behavior was not an isolated incident but appeared to be part of a broader pattern. They reported that he had followed Thai women in the vicinity and had repeatedly become physically aggressive before bystanders intervened and de‑escalated the situation, with incidents occurring over a longer period at the same spot.
Police probe and possible charges
The Russian was taken to the Pattaya City Police Station for questioning. Initial allegations included public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. According to officers, further legal action would depend on a formal complaint from the injured woman, and the investigation remained ongoing.
