NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, THAILAND – A late-night noise complaint in the city turned into a shootout between a reportedly drunk police officer and a garage owner, leaving no one injured but deepening concerns over police conduct.
Noise complaint turned violent
Around 23:00 on Wednesday, a police officer entered a workshop on Pak Nakhon Road, accusing the staff of carrying out excessively loud repair work during nighttime hours. The employees insisted they were only sitting together and talking, but the officer, who appeared clearly intoxicated, did not believe them. Suddenly he reached for his hip, drew his service weapon and pointed it at one of the mechanics, sending the situation out of control.
Garage owner returns fire in claimed self-defence
What followed resembled a scene from an action film, as several shots rang out into the night. The garage owner, who possessed a legally owned firearm, said he felt compelled to act and, claiming self-defence, drew his own pistol and fired back. The exchange of gunfire between a state official and a civilian ended without injuries, an outcome described as fortunate given the intensity of the confrontation.
Prior incidents alleged with same officer
After the shootout, the garage owner filed a complaint against the officer, and investigators uncovered troubling background information.
“This was already the second time I had trouble with the same officer. Both times he was drunk. When he is sober, he is calm, but under the influence of alcohol he becomes aggressive,”
said the businessman to the investigating colleagues. This time, according to his account, the police officer simply started shooting, which forced him to fire back to keep the officer at a distance.
Evidence shows scene of chaos
Investigators from Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat police station arrived to find a bizarre scene at the workshop. Clear bullet holes were visible in the wall of the garage, and a nearby stainless-steel fence showed damage consistent with gunfire. Footage from surveillance cameras was being reviewed, while the officer was identified as a provincial police officer currently assigned to a local court and living nearby.
Both men file complaints
The legal situation remained complex, as both men lodged complaints against each other. The officer was expected to face potential charges related to the use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol and dangerous bodily harm. The garage owner now had to prove his claim of self-defence, while the public prosecutor would decide whether and which charges to bring against either side.
Echoes of past tragedy and wider concerns
The case recalled a similar tragedy in Samut Prakan in September, when a person was killed in a workshop incident. The Nakhon Si Thammarat shooting highlighted broader problems within the police, particularly how an officer could patrol while both armed and intoxicated. With this scandal, the Thai police leadership again came under pressure to enforce greater discipline, as citizens questioned who would protect them if the police themselves became a danger.
