KO PHA-NGAN, THAILAND – Tourist police on the island of Ko Pha-ngan arrested an internationally wanted Nigerian drug suspect after forcing him from his car during a roadblock operation.
Suspect had fled court after earlier cocaine sting
The 38-year-old Nigerian, Ukoma Jefta Nuzbech, had already been caught in a police sting on 12 March last year. At that time, he delivered 25.71 grams of cocaine worth 240,000 baht (about 6,000 euros) to an undercover investigator. After his arrest he was released on bail on the condition that he appear in court, but he disappeared and is believed to have moved between Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan while continuing his drug business.
Tip-off triggered large roadblock operation
A confidential tip on Wednesday informed the Tourist Police that the wanted man was travelling on a road on the island. The Tourist Police quickly coordinated a large-scale operation with the local police station and the Surat Thani provincial police, setting up a roadblock checkpoint. Officers stopped a white Mitsubishi Mirage with Bangkok licence plates, finding Nuzbech at the wheel.
Violent window smashing ended stand-off
The officers ordered the Nigerian to leave the vehicle and surrender, but he repeatedly refused to open the door. The arrest then escalated into a spectacular scene recorded on police cameras, as one officer smashed a side window with a baton while another kicked the glass. After this forceful action, Nuzbech gave up, got out of the car and was led away in handcuffs.
Drugs, cash and phone seized from car
During the search of the vehicle, investigators seized 1.18 grams of cocaine, 50,280 baht (about 1,260 euros) in cash and a mobile phone. Analysis of the phone revealed messages about drug deals and a contact for a 29-year-old Thai woman from Roi Et province. Nuzbech had apparently sent customers a QR code linked to her bank account, and police have now opened an investigation against the woman as well.
Long prison term likely under Thai drug laws
According to police, Nuzbech was now accused of possession of a Category 2 drug with intent to sell. This offence can be punished with up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to one million baht. Because he also violated his bail conditions, the court was expected to show little leniency.
Police aim to dismantle wider network
Investigators stated they would continue their work to break up the suspect’s entire drug network on the island. For partygoers on Ko Pha-ngan, the arrest was intended as a clear signal that the island is not a lawless space for drug dealers.
