KHON KAEN, THAILAND – A construction crane toppled onto a two-storey wooden house in Khon Kaen, leaving the resident narrowly unharmed and his family homeless as they sought compensation.
Crane topples during house lifting operation
The incident occurred on Friday around 11 a.m., when a prefabricated house was being lifted onto a plot in a residential estate. The crane had already raised a load of more than one tonne to a height of over 10 meters, swinging it above high-voltage power lines. The machine then lost balance, crashing down with its load onto the adjacent wooden house.
Seconds between escape and impact
The 29-year-old resident had just left his bedroom when the crane struck the building, blocking his path with dust and debris. He later recalled the moment, stating,
“It was like an explosion.”
said the rescued resident. Rescuers said the heavily damaged area was a part of the house he usually passed through frequently.
Rescue through a shattered window
Workers and the site manager immediately rushed into the destroyed structure, shouting to locate anyone trapped inside. A voice responded from the rubble, and helpers were forced to break open a window to free the man.
“I was incredibly lucky,”
said the rescued resident.
Home crushed, family left homeless
One half of the wooden house was completely crushed, with furniture and personal belongings destroyed. The building was no longer habitable, leaving the family without a home. A relative who had been washing clothes nearby heard the crash, ran outside and saw the crane lying across the family’s house.
Fears over compensation and future
The displaced family now faced an uncertain future and worried about financial gaps in any settlement.
“Any gap in compensation could cause us serious problems,”
said a family member. They demanded a fair and transparent solution so they would not be left to cover the repair costs themselves.
Preliminary probe points to operator error
Initial investigations indicated a possible operating error by the crane driver. Witnesses and security camera footage suggested that the heavy load had not been lowered to relieve pressure on the crane before it moved. The critical mistake appeared to have been moving the full weight across the power lines.
Insurance and neighborhood concern
The crane company stated that it held accident insurance in connection with the incident. However, details on how and when compensation would be paid remained unclear to the family. The accident stirred significant concern in the neighborhood about safety when heavy machinery operated close to residential homes.
Questions over safety in residential areas
Residents were left asking how safe housing areas truly were when multi-tonne machines worked directly beside families. The case raised broader questions about responsibility when a technical or operating failure nearly cost a life and destroyed a family’s home and livelihood.
