Visa debate loud online, limited on the ground
Online discussions sharply focused on whether a possible reduction of the visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days might deter visitors.
Long-term observers, however, considered the impact to be overstated, noting that most trips already followed the pattern of shorter stays.
Thirty days had long been the norm
Thailand had for years operated with a 30-day framework on arrival, and a large share of visitors stayed within that period.
For many travelers, visa rules therefore were not the decisive factor in choosing whether or not to visit Thailand.
Rising costs reshape Pattaya’s appeal
More visible than immigration policy were economic factors such as international airfares, higher accommodation costs and everyday inflation.
As a result, Thailand’s image as an inexpensive winter destination came under pressure, especially for traditional “winter escapees” from Europe and North America.
Vietnam and Malaysia emerge as strong alternatives
At the same time, regional competitors like Vietnam and Malaysia positioned themselves as simpler and more predictable options.
They promoted longer visa-free stays and less frequent policy changes, which could be a key argument for repeat visitors who plan well in advance.
Split views in Pattaya: control versus self-inflicted damage
In Pattaya itself, opinions were divided: some saw stricter rules as a way to curb abuse of visa exemptions and illegal activities.
Others warned that Thailand could be harming itself unnecessarily during a period of intense global competition for tourists.
Unpredictability frustrates long-stay and regular guests
Experienced visitors voiced frustration over recurring changes to visa policy, which had been adjusted time and again over the years.
For seasonal long-stay guests and multiple-time visitors in particular, this lack of predictability became an obstacle, making it harder to plan extended stays.
What is really shifting tourism
Despite heated reactions, one common thread emerged: most tourists were not being driven away by visa rules alone.
Rather, it was the combination of higher costs, more attractive alternatives in the region and changing travel preferences that slowly shifted patterns in holiday hubs like Pattaya.
