Pol Sgt Thanawat Panyalertsattha, an enquiry officer at Bang Bung district office in Chon Buri, lost his leg in a road accident in 2021. Despite this life-changing event, he excelled in a Royal Thai Police promotion exam, achieving top scores and demonstrating outstanding physical performance, including running and swimming while wearing a prosthetic leg.
Initially, the exam committee rejected his promotion, citing a rule against “supporting tools or equipment,” with Thanawat’s prosthetic leg being the reason for disqualification.
Nationwide attention prompts change
The case drew widespread attention on social media and public sympathy, prompting a reassessment by the Royal Thai Police. This week, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet, the national police chief, ordered Thanawat’s reinstatement to the promotion list, recognizing his merit and determination.
In a statement, Thanawat expressed gratitude, calling the decision not only a personal victory but also a milestone for shifting attitudes toward disabilities in Thailand. He highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by other officers with similar obstacles and urged them to advocate for equal treatment.

The reinstatement of Thanawat sets a precedent within the Royal Thai Police, promoting the view that capability should be judged beyond physical limitations.
