CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – The city marked its 730th anniversary on 19 April with an extensive cultural program and related road closures around the Three Kings Monument.
730 Years of Chiang Mai: Date and Theme
The anniversary event under the motto “730 Years of the City of Chiang Mai – Cultural City on the Way to World Heritage City” took place on 19 April. The program was divided into two time windows, starting in the morning from 06:30 and continuing in the evening from 18:00 to 20:00.
Activities focused on highlighting Chiang Mai’s role as a cultural center. The schedule was designed to attract residents and visitors at different times of day and to showcase traditional performances in key historic locations.
Event Locations in the Old Town
Central venues for the celebrations included Phra Pokklao Road and the square at the royal Three Kings Monument. These sites formed the core area for ceremonies and performances.
The activities were thus concentrated in one of the most historically significant parts of Chiang Mai’s inner city. Authorities emphasized the old town setting as an integral part of the anniversary concept.
Morning Procession to the Three Kings Statue
In the morning, organizers scheduled a procession with offerings for worship at the Three Kings Monument. The procession assembled at the Vocational College and then moved towards the monument.
Around 200 participants were expected to take part in this ceremonial march. The offering procession was planned as a symbolic tribute to the city’s history and its founding figures.
Evening Program: 730 Dancers
Between 18:00 and 20:00, a total of 730 dancers were set to participate in a large performance as part of the anniversary celebrations. The number of performers reflected the 730 years since the city’s founding.
This dance performance was announced as the highlight of the evening. It took place in the vicinity of the designated event areas around Phra Pokklao Road and the Three Kings Monument square.
Road Closures and Affected Intersections
For the evening program, additional traffic closures were put in place. One section of the closure extended from the Yupparaj intersection to the Thai Airways intersection.
On the other side, the restricted area ran from the Yupparaj intersection to the Boon Yoo intersection. These measures were introduced to create space for participants and spectators and to separate event areas from regular traffic.
Police Manage Traffic and Safety
Authorities informed the public in advance about the traffic measures so that residents and road users could prepare. The intention was to minimize disruption while enabling the large-scale cultural program to proceed as planned.
Traffic police were assigned to the closure points to coordinate the flow of vehicles and ensure the safety of participants. Their presence was meant to support both event logistics and public order during the anniversary celebrations.
