CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – Immigration officers in Chiang Mai detained a Canadian national on 2 March 2026 on suspicion of remaining in the country after his Non-ED visa had expired, as authorities stepped up action against illegal stays.
Arrest during patrol on Mahidol Road
Officers from Chiang Mai Immigration identified the man during a patrol on Mahidol Road in the Chang Klan area of Mueang Chiang Mai. A check against the immigration database reportedly showed that he was staying in the country illegally.
The Canadian was taken to Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, where legal proceedings were initiated. Authorities said the case formed part of targeted inspections in the city.
Allegation of overstay after visa expiry
According to officials, the allegation was that the foreigner had remained in the kingdom after his granted permission to stay had already expired. He was accused of violating provisions of Thailand’s Immigration Act.
The man admitted that he had entered Thailand on a Non-ED visa to study at a recognised educational institution. He then neither left the country nor applied for an extension once the visa had run out, authorities said.
Coordinated operation on 2 March
The arrest took place during inspections carried out jointly by Chiang Mai Immigration and Immigration Division 5 within their area of responsibility. The coordinated operation focused on foreigners suspected of immigration offences.
Police confirmed that, during this operation, a Canadian citizen was taken into custody for overstaying his visa. Further checks on other foreign residents were announced for the coming period.
Orders from Bangkok for tougher line on foreign crime
The background to the case was a political directive from Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police. He had instructed the Immigration Bureau to tighten controls on foreigners involved in legal violations, “inappropriate behavior” or transnational structures.
According to police, Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanumart Boonyalak, chief of the Immigration Bureau, and his deputy Pol. Maj. Gen. Phanthana Nuchanart ordered subordinate units to step up investigations and suppression of illegal entry, assistance in evading arrest, unlawful migration and visa overstays.
Leadership in northern Thailand
For northern Thailand, authorities pointed to Pol. Maj. Gen. Sarawut Khon Yai, commander of Immigration Division 5, and Pol. Col. Ekkorn Busababodin, his deputy. They had directed a strict enforcement approach toward foreign offenders and crimes affecting the public.
In Chiang Mai, Pol. Col. Phithakphong Charoenkul, superintendent of Chiang Mai Immigration, and his deputy Pol. Lt. Col. Nattaphon Chumbuatong assigned investigators to pursue violations under the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 and related laws. The Canadian’s case was handled under this framework.

The detained man was handed over to investigators at Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station for further action. Officials stated that the next steps would follow Thai legal procedures.
Immigration authorities stressed that the case was part of ongoing efforts against visa overstays and illegal foreign residents in Chiang Mai. They indicated that similar checks would continue as part of the broader national campaign.
