CHIANG RAI, Thailand – A Buddhist hospital providing free daily medical care to hundreds is on the brink of collapse. The Wat Huay Pla Kang Hospital for Charity is facing a severe financial crisis, with its funds expected to run out in less than two months.
Only two months of funds left
The critical news comes directly from the hospital’s abbot. Phra Paisan Prachatorn, the founder, has sounded the alarm, stating that current resources will only last for approximately 60 more days.
Subsequently, the future of free medical services for impoverished patients remains uncertain. The facility, equipped with 90 beds and modern examination devices, risks becoming idle.
Temple suffering from decline in visitors
Financially, the hospital is reliant on the Huay Pla Kang Temple. However, the temple’s revenue streams have significantly decreased.
The decline is attributed to a combination of rising fuel prices and general economic pressures. This has led to fewer visitors and, consequently, dwindling donations, directly impacting the clinic’s operations.
300 free treatments per day in danger
Every day, 60 doctors, nurses, and support staff provide treatment to about 300 patients without charge. The hospital specializes in dental and general medicine.
Its advanced equipment allows for comprehensive diagnoses, including liver, kidney, and lung examinations. This service is often the only available medical recourse for many impoverished individuals in the region.
Medications and supplies running low
Supply shortages are now becoming apparent. Medications, bandages, and medical equipment are already in short supply.
Funding for personnel and volunteers is also becoming increasingly scarce. The abbot sees no viable path to maintaining the current level of service.
Four years of aid threatened with ending
For nearly four years, the facility in Muang District has served patients unable to afford medical treatment. Its model was once considered a beacon of hope. However, increasing costs and declining income are now pushing this initiative to its limits. Without swift assistance, the hospital faces closure in a matter of weeks.
