Robert Hoadley, 45, left the United Kingdom in 2025, seeking a more affordable and fulfilling life. He previously managed expenses exceeding £3,000 per month in Portsmouth. Now, he reports living comfortably in Chiang Mai on just £800 per month, experiencing a lifestyle that he finds significantly more satisfying.
His move was prompted by frustration with the construction industry. Years of demanding work and long hours, coupled with rising bills, left him feeling a lack of true freedom. Rather than waiting until retirement, Hoadley made the drastic decision to sell all his possessions and move over 6,000 miles to northern Thailand.
From Construction Worker to Online Success
Today, Hoadley works as a content creator, developing multiple online income streams. His platform, “Sea Turkey Adventures,” details the cost of living and aspects of expatriate life. His videos have garnered substantial attention, with some clips surpassing 200,000 views and over 6,000 followers regularly tracking his experiences.
Less Drinking, More Living
The daily life in warm Chiang Mai is considerably less stressful for Hoadley. Accessible gyms, cafes, swimming pools, and outdoor activities provide ample opportunities for health and routine. While a pint can be purchased for as little as £2, Hoadley states he drinks significantly less than he did in his home country, focusing instead on his fitness.
What the Brit Misses About Home
Despite his happiness in Thailand, Hoadley does experience moments of nostalgia. He misses his friends and family, as well as the traditional pub culture of the UK. He also candidly admits that certain foods and the specific British sense of humor and sarcasm are difficult to replicate abroad.
Thailand Remains His New Home
