BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s financial regulators and Binance are preparing to let tourists pay directly in Thai baht by converting their digital assets, marking a major development in crypto-based tourism.
Binance TH joins Thailand’s TouristDigiPay initiative
On March 2024 in Bangkok, Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Binance TH, confirmed that the platform had entered talks to join the TouristDigiPay program supported by the Bank of Thailand and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).
“We serve almost 300 million users worldwide,”
said Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Binance TH.
He stated that the company remained one of the most trusted digital-asset platforms globally. The program, expected to start later in 2024, aims to allow foreign travelers to directly exchange cryptocurrency into Thai baht through licensed digital partners.
Participation requires strict local compliance
To operate under Thai financial regulations, Binance TH must collaborate with a local e-money license holder. The exchange process will connect crypto wallets to baht accounts for immediate conversion at authorized rates.
“We are actively assessing local partners,”
said Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Binance TH.
He emphasized that the company would comply with all Thai financial requirements to ensure safe and seamless transactions.
Anti-money-laundering limits and monitoring
The AMLO imposed a cap of 500,000 baht (approximately €12,500) per tourist per month. Travelers must verify identity using the NFC chip embedded in passports. All exchanges will remain traceable under Thailand’s Know Your Customer (KYC) and AML laws.
“Thailand’s regulators are taking a balanced approach,”
said an unnamed regulatory insider.
Authorities intend to attract innovation while maintaining high compliance standards.
Thailand’s digital-economy strategy
The Thai government and Central Bank consider the TouristDigiPay platform part of a broader push to integrate the digital economy into mainstream tourism policy. The initiative supports national goals to increase revenue from high-tech travelers who already use blockchain-based finance tools.
“The program fits Thailand’s push toward a digital economy,”
said Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Binance TH.
The rollout will position Thailand among the first Asia-Pacific nations linking tourist spending directly to cryptocurrency systems.
Enhanced risk detection and enforcement
Binance TH announced it would install advanced risk-analysis software to track unusual or rapid transactions beyond the required threshold. The system will identify irregular behavior and report directly to regulators in Bangkok.
“If warning signs appear, accounts will be frozen immediately,”
said Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Binance TH.
The company pledged to alert Thai authorities without delay, ensuring that the platform operates within the country’s anti-money-laundering framework.
Potential impact on Thailand’s tourism sector
By combining blockchain access with national identification controls, TouristDigiPay could reshape tourist spending infrastructure across Phuket, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai. Analysts expect the system to draw international travelers familiar with digital currencies.
Through verified automation and capped usage, Thailand seeks to gain both financial transparency and digital tourism growth, marking the start of a new regulatory frontier in crypto-based travel.
