A Japanese woman’s trip to Bangkok takes a distressing turn after a taxi driver allegedly steals her mobile phone during a coffee stop.
Taxi Driver Tricks Tourist at Convenience Store
The incident unfolds at a Bangkok convenience store around 10am on Tuesday, October 7. According to Namwhan Apinya, a friend of the victim, the Japanese woman stops to buy coffee. The taxi driver, claiming he also wants a drink, persuades her to buy one for him.
He follows her into the store after switching off the taxi’s engine. The woman carries two mobile phones. While she pays for the drinks with one device, she leaves the other on the cashier counter.
Seizing the opportunity, the taxi driver grabs the unattended phone, slips it into the same plastic bag as the coffee, and quickly leaves. He reportedly switches off the stolen phone, making it impossible for the woman to track.
Victim Appeals for Help After Losing Important Documents
Namwhan Apinya shares the story on Facebook, hoping to recover her friend’s phone. She explains, “My friend wants her device back because it contains many important documents and personal information.”
The Japanese woman reports the theft to police and requests security footage from the store. She also asks Apinya to publicise the incident online, seeking help from the public and authorities.
Apinya adds that her friend is a frequent visitor to Thailand and loves the country. She urges the online community to assist, saying, “I hope this incident won’t make her feel hurt.”
Similar Taxi Theft Cases Raise Concerns
This is not an isolated case. In a recent incident, a Japanese interpreter in Nonthaburi province files a complaint against a taxi driver who steals his wallet containing 2,080 baht, cards, and documents.
CCTV footage shows the interpreter dropping his wallet at a petrol station. The taxi driver stops, picks it up, and later tells police he will return the wallet but insists on keeping the cash, claiming he spent 800 baht on fuel.
Police Investigate as Public Shares Taxi Details
The exact location of the Bangkok convenience store remains unclear. However, Apinya posts a screenshot of the taxi’s registration plate from CCTV footage, revealing the yellow cab is registered in Bangkok.
