BANGKOK, THAILAND – Bangkok was ranked fifth in a new 2026 list of the world’s top food cities, driven by its exceptional variety and surprisingly low prices.
Study from the UK ranks 36 cities
The ranking was produced by Travelbag, a British long-haul travel provider that compared 36 cities worldwide using a points system. The assessment covered average restaurant costs, the number of food-related activities, visibility on Instagram and TikTok, and annual Google search interest in the United Kingdom for “[city] food”.
According to the study, Dubai led the top 10, with Bangkok emerging as a strong performer in one core category despite placing fifth overall. The list focused on how attractive destinations were for visitors specifically seeking food experiences.
Bangkok leads with 406 food activities
Bangkok topped the survey for food activities, with 406 offerings ranging from cooking classes to night market tours and street food routes. This put the Thai capital clearly ahead of its closest competitors in the top tier of destinations.
Even Dubai, which headed the overall ranking, reached “only” 180 activities in this category, according to the study. The researchers highlighted the breadth of organised experiences available to visitors in Bangkok’s food scene.
Price advantage – dining that barely hurts the wallet
A three-course meal for two people in a mid-range restaurant cost an average of £24 in Bangkok, the lowest figure among the top 10 cities. The comparison did not include drinks.
By contrast, the study cited £65 for Toronto, £76 for Chicago and £41 for Seoul for similar meals. The figures underlined the price-performance edge Bangkok held over several Western and Asian competitors.
Less social media shine than Western rivals
On online visibility, Bangkok lagged behind many Western cities. The study counted 685,000 Instagram posts and 42,400 TikTok posts for the location hashtag linked to the Thai capital.
Melbourne, by comparison, registered 3.1 million Instagram posts, while Toronto reached 193,900 TikTok posts. The authors suggested such numbers likely reflected the platforms’ user base more than the actual quality of local food.
The top 10 for 2026 – who ranked ahead of Bangkok
Dubai took first place in the 2026 food city ranking, followed by Melbourne, Toronto and Singapore, with Bangkok in fifth position. The remaining places in the top 10 went to Sydney, Seoul, Hong Kong, Chicago and Houston.
The distribution showed how the list stretched between “buzz online” and “experience on the ground”, as the study described it. Cities with strong social media presence did not always match the breadth of in-person food options seen in Bangkok.
Why Bangkok convinces on the ground – from street food to fine dining
Travelbag attributed Bangkok’s high placement above all to diversity, value for money and a deeply rooted food culture that extends beyond formal restaurants. The city’s spectrum ranges from inexpensive street food to internationally recognised fine dining addresses.
According to the study, this breadth was a key factor behind Bangkok’s strong showing. The findings suggested that what visitors can actually taste on streets and markets remains central to the city’s appeal as a food destination.
