Austrian tourist dies in Phuket hotel

62-year-old collapsed in Karon room as wife watched on

PHUKET, THAILAND – A 62-year-old tourist from Austria collapsed and died in his hotel room in Phuket’s Karon district in the early hours, turning a beach holiday into a sudden tragedy.

Holiday in Karon ends in sudden tragedy

The Austrian couple had been staying in the Karon area of Phuket since 21 November, with their trip scheduled to run until 6 December. On the evening before the incident, they had dinner together in Kata.

“He seemed healthy and cheerful,”

said the wife, according to investigators.

While she went to sleep after returning to the hotel, her husband stayed awake, continuing to drink beer and smoke. Around 5:30 a.m., she was woken by his loud coughing.

Minutes of panic in the hotel room

The situation escalated quickly as the 62-year-old became restless, walked briefly around the room and then suddenly collapsed near the balcony door. His desperate wife immediately alerted the hotel staff. By the time help arrived, he was no longer responsive.

All attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful, and the emergency doctor could only confirm his death.

Long history of high blood pressure

During questioning, the widow provided crucial information about her husband’s health, stating that he had long suffered from high blood pressure.

“He had been taking medication for it for about a decade,”

said the wife.

Whether this condition was directly linked to his sudden death was to be determined. The body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a judicial autopsy to establish the exact cause of death.

Authorities treat case as non-criminal

Similar fatal incidents involving tourists were reported to occur repeatedly in Thailand, often involving pre-existing conditions, heat, alcohol or unfamiliar physical strain. In such cases, Thai authorities routinely assumed a non-criminal incident unless evidence suggested otherwise.

Even so, police were expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation before the body would be cleared for repatriation.

Hard road ahead for widow and warning for travelers

For the bereaved wife, a difficult process of dealing with bureaucratic formalities in a foreign country began, and the Austrian embassy in Bangkok was notified. For other travelers, the case served as a somber reminder to take their own health seriously and to pay attention to warning signs from the body, even while on holiday.

Usually seen as a symbol of carefree beach vacations, Phuket showed a different, tragic side on this day.
