From Malaysia to China in record speed
On 27 June 2025, the ASEAN Express made its historic inaugural test run. Departing from Kelana Jaya freight terminal in Selangor, Malaysia, the train reached Chongqing, China in just 14 days, carrying electronics and agricultural goods.
Soon, the journey is expected to take only nine days — far faster than the typical 14–21 days required by sea freight. The route links Malaysia’s Kontena Nasional Depot, Thailand’s Lat Krabang Container Depot, Laos’ Thanaleng Dry Port, and ends in China, offering a new lifeline for regional trade.
Thailand emerges as a strategic hub
SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala emphasized the importance of diplomatic coordination: “Collaboration with the Thai embassy in Malaysia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is crucial to overcome obstacles.”
Thailand is positioning itself as the central hub of ASEAN rail transport. The benefits are striking: the train is 30% cheaper than road transport, environmentally friendlier, and reduces shipping times — giving companies greater competitiveness. By late 2025, even fresh Musang King durians are expected to travel by rail to China.
Passengers may soon join the ride
Freight isn’t the only focus. Plans are underway for cross-border passenger trains linking Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal with Malaysia’s Butterworth Station, aiming for seamless travel and stronger regional connectivity. Currently, Malaysia’s KTMB plans two weekly services between Kelana Jaya and Chongqing, with potential expansion based on demand.
Technical challenge: Different track gauges
Hurdles remain. Thailand and Malaysia use a 1-meter gauge, while Laos operates on the 1,435-mm standard gauge. Containers must be transferred in Vientiane, a process taking nearly two hours per train. Nevertheless, analysts believe the ASEAN Express is “a strong starting point,” strengthening Malaysia’s role as a key player in the new rail corridor.
The ASEAN Express is more than a train — it’s a regional economic game-changer. It boosts supply chains, trade, tourism, and positions Southeast Asia as a serious contender in global commerce. Soon, goods from China could reach Malaysia faster than ever — and fresh durians could arrive on Chinese tables on time.
